Is Paragliding in Fethiye Safe? (All the Facts)

The idea of gliding from hundreds of meters high, with no ground beneath your feet, instinctively raises the question, "Is this really safe?" Fethiye Babadağ is not only one of the most beautiful flying spots in the world but also one of the most frequently flown commercial routes.

So, does the extreme perception of "extreme sports" we see on social media or in the news reflect reality? Skywalkers Paragliding enters the kitchen of flight safety, transparently sharing the strict legal measures taken at Babadağ and our own internal safety protocols with you.

Natural and Geographical Safety Advantages of Babadağ

The only reason Fethiye is a world brand in paragliding is not just its scenery; it is the natural safety shield that its geography offers for flying:

1. Height Advantage (1969m)  Babadağ is so high that the pilot glides for a long time after takeoff. This height provides a massive time advantage for the pilot to compensate for any minor equipment or weather issues and implement a backup plan. (Jumps from low hills are risky, not high mountains).

2. Perfect Landing Area: Ölüdeniz Belceğiz Beach is kilometers long, wide, flat, and covered with soft sand. There are no tall skyscrapers or dangerous power lines around. It is one of the most comfortable natural runways in the world for landing.
3. Mediterranean Climate: Sudden tropical storms or surprise tornadoes are not seen in this region. Weather deterioration or increased wind intensity can be detected hours in advance by meteorological devices.

THK Inspections and Strict Legal Rules

Flying in Fethiye is not a reckless act; it is under state control.
- National Park and THK Control: At the turnstiles for the ascent, the identity, flight license, and health report of each pilot are checked.
- Wind Limits: There are giant wind measurement stations at the takeoff runways. The moment the wind speed exceeds legal limits (e.g., 35-40 km/h) or the cloud base drops very low, official authorities immediately raise a "red flag," and no company (even if it has the world's best pilot) is allowed to fly.

 Skywalkers Paragliding Safety Protocols

Beyond the rules set by the state, Skywalkers Paragliding has its own internal red lines:

 1. Equipment Standardization (EN Approval)

A paraglider has a "flight hour" lifespan, not a shelf life. Our wings, suspension lines, harnesses, and carabiners are regularly tested and renewed before reaching their limits. All materials used are EN (European Norm) certified by independent testing organizations.

2. Double Check System

The primary cause of accidents in aviation is "forgetfulness" or "carelessness." Your pilot secures their connections and yours on the takeoff runway. However, this is not enough. Just before heading to the runway, the area supervisor locks it and it is **checked visually and manually a second time** by another expert.

3. Emergency (Reserve Parachute) System

It is our only friend that we never expect to use but always have with us. Under the harness where the pilot sits, there is a "Reserve Parachute" that opens within seconds when manually pulled, completely independent of the main parachute. These parachutes are aired and repacked by experts at the beginning of each season.

 Insurance Coverage

Despite all these safety nets, every guest is covered by **Comprehensive Third Party and Passenger Flight Insurance** from the moment they step into the Skywalkers Paragliding office. This insurance covers all medical treatment costs for any adverse events (including simple ankle sprains) that may occur from your boarding of the transfer vehicle to the moment of flight and after landing.

 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What happens if I drop my phone during the flight?

Selfie sticks or recording with a mobile phone is prohibited (it may fly out of your hand due to wind intensity). However, photos during the flight are taken by your pilot using professional Go-Pro action cameras. The camera is attached to the pilot with special safety ropes, so the risk of falling is zero.

If the wind suddenly stops, does the parachute fall quickly?

No. A paraglider is not a "falling" device but a "gliding" (glider) device. Even if the wind completely stops, thanks to the aerodynamic structure of the wing, the parachute descends only 1-1.5 meters per second, utilizing the air and continues to glide forward.

Will my legs break when landing?

90% of injuries (minor sprains) occur during landing, and the sole reason for this is the passenger not listening to the pilot. Just before reaching the ground, your pilot will tell you to "Lift your legs straight up in the air." If you do this, the pilot will run to the ground from behind, and you will land softly as if you were sitting in your chair. If you dangle your legs or stubbornly try to stand up and run, you may sprain your ankle.
