Who Is Not Suitable for Paragliding? (Health and Limitations)
Paragliding is one of the statistically safest outdoor sports that anyone aged 7 to 70 can experience when done with professional pilots. However, since gliding in the air is a unique and adrenaline-filled experience, individuals with certain health issues should avoid this sport or proceed with a doctor's approval. At Skywalkers Paragliding, the safety of our guests comes first; therefore, a pre-flight health assessment is a protocol we do not compromise on.
If you plan to fly from Fethiye Babadağ towards the unique view of Ölüdeniz, it is vital to review the following health conditions and physical limitations before making a reservation.
Situations Where Flight Is Absolutely Prohibited (Absolute Barriers)
If you have any of the following conditions, it is legally and medically impossible for you to fly. These rules are directly for your safety and that of your baby, if applicable.
1. Pregnancy
Regardless of which month or week of pregnancy you are in (it does not matter from the 1st trimester to the 3rd trimester), paragliding is strictly prohibited.
- Risk Factor: The harness worn during flight exerts direct pressure on the abdomen and groin area. The physical effort during takeoff, the sudden adrenaline surge experienced in the air, and potential jolts during landing pose unacceptable risks for the expectant mother and baby.
- What Should You Do? We recommend experiencing this after you have successfully given birth and received your doctor's approval for physical activities (usually after 2-3 months).
2. Serious Heart and Vascular Diseases
Individuals with active heart disease, those experiencing heart failure, or those who have had a heart attack recently (within the last year) are not accepted for flight. It is also risky for patients with pacemakers to fly.
- Risk Factor: The excitement during the ascent to the summit of Babadağ and at the moment of takeoff elevates the adrenaline and cortisol levels in the body. A rapid increase in heart rate (pulse) to levels of 150-160 can trigger serious crises in individuals with weak heart muscles or arrhythmias.
3. Uncontrolled Neurological Disorders
Paragliding is not suitable for individuals, especially those with Epilepsy and those who have recently had a stroke.
- Risk Factor: In the event of a seizure at high altitude, under the sound of wind and excitement, the pilot's chance of medical intervention in the air is nearly zero.
Relative Conditions Requiring Doctor's Approval
Some chronic conditions may not directly prevent you from flying, but with your specialist doctor's permission and the preliminary assessment of Skywalkers Paragliding pilots, a flight can be planned.
- Asthma and COPD: Patients with mild asthma can fly as long as they carry their inhaler (bronchodilator) spray with them. However, patients with severe COPD who experience significant shortness of breath may be adversely affected by the lower oxygen levels at an altitude of 2000 meters.
- Hypertension: Patients whose blood pressure is completely controlled with medication can fly safely. However, those with unstable and suddenly rising blood pressure issues may face risks from adrenaline-induced spikes in blood pressure.
- Panic Attacks and Severe Fear of Heights: Fear of heights can be overcome with flight; however, if this turns into uncontrollable panic attack crises, it is risky. Sudden and unpredictable panic movements by the passenger in the air can disrupt the parachute's aerodynamics and flight safety.
- Previous Spine Surgeries: Those who have undergone surgery for herniated discs in the back or neck must have at least 6 months to 1 year passed since their surgery and must obtain approval from their doctors to participate in "lightly jarring activities."
Temporarily Flight-Restricting Conditions
Some daily health issues or conditions may temporarily prevent you from flying. In these cases, you should postpone your reservation.
- Alcohol and Substance Influence: Intense alcohol consumption within 24 hours before the flight is prohibited. Alcohol slows reflexes and can cause nausea in the air. Guests detected with the smell of alcohol or behavioral disturbances will have their flights canceled for safety reasons.
- Severe Cold and Sinusitis: Rapid descent from 2000 meters with nasal congestion and severe sinusitis can cause serious pressure pain (barotrauma) in your eardrum.
- Fractures, Dislocations, or Casts: Flights cannot be conducted if you have an active cast on your leg or arm. The damaged area may be strained during takeoff or landing.
What Are the Weight and Age Limits?
To ensure safe aerodynamics in paragliding, certain physical limits are applied.
- Minimum Age and Weight: Children aged approximately 4-5 years and weighing at least 15-20 kg can fly with parental consent.
- Maximum Weight: Depending on the height and weight ratio, the general limit is a maximum of 110 kg for men and around 90-95 kg for women.
- Upper Age Limit: There is no upper age limit as long as your general health permits. To date, dozens of our guests over the age of 80 have successfully met the sky.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
I have a herniated disc, can I paraglide?
If you are not in an active and severe pain period, you can fly. Our experienced pilots ensure that during landing, they take all the weight on themselves, allowing the passenger to land softly, usually sitting, with zero impact.
Should I take my chronic medications before flying?
Continue taking your routine medications (such as for blood pressure, thyroid, etc.) at your usual times. However, if you are using strong painkillers that induce sleep or heavy sedatives that slow reflexes, you should avoid these medications on the day of the flight.
Can physically disabled individuals fly?
Yes, they can fly. Many of our guests with walking disabilities, visual or hearing impairments are safely flown with special wheeled devices or transport methods. All you need to do is inform our team of your condition in advance during the reservation process.
